About Eric

I grew up in Salt Lake City, Utah with two brothers and two sisters. This year (2015) my parents are celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary, and it has been a wonderful occasion to reflect on family. My own hope is that Aki and I will soon be able to adopt a child to give some of the love that we have been so fortunate to receive.

As an university student I developed lifelong interests in Japan and the study of human cultures (anthropology). Pursuing these two interests has enriched both my personal and professional life. I met Aki while studying abroad in Japan in 1999 and we started dating when I returned to the country in 2002 to teach English. After we were married in 2005, we moved to Hawaiʻi, where I pursued graduate studies in anthropology. In 2012, I received my Ph.D. in anthropology from the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa. Since then I have worked as an assistant professor of Japanese Studies at Earlham College in Richmond, Indiana. Learning continues to be a life passion of mine, one that I look forward to sharing with my children.

I am a nature enthusiast and love spending time outdoors. While living in Hawaiʻi, Aki and I spent many of our weekends on the beach or hiking in the mountains. Introducing my children to the wonders of the natural world has long been a dream of mine. I also enjoy listening to a variety of different music, particularly jazz, and try to go see live music whenever I have a chance.

At my core, I am a person who enjoys life and marvels at the many wonderful things the world has to offer. I am also a person who seeks to promote love, caring, and equality for all people. These are values that I hold dear and hope to convey to my children.

A Note From Aki

Eric is a wonderful partner. He puts his family first and always makes me feel like I am supported and cared for. He is intelligent, patient, and sensitive to the needs of others. As an educator, he is constantly working to improve the lives of his students. All of these qualities will make Eric a caring, loving, and supportive dad. He also has a great appreciation for nature and the outdoors, so I am excited for him to lead our little one on a trail hike, or teach them how to set up a tent for camping!
